Surplus Value

Karl Marx’s concept of ‘surplus value’ is prevalent in our everyday lives.  Think of examples in your everyday where you are not receiving full value/compensation for the acts you do.  In many workplaces, employees and potential employees are given personality tests — quite similar to what you would see in a women’s magazine ie. Cosmo.

What do you think the benefits or disadvantages to both yourself or the company are by completing a quiz?  Are there other areas where you may see exploitation of your value?

  1. Marx’s concept of surplus value is one we will explore in more detail in two weeks. By definition, we are producing surplus value anytime we produce value for our employer that exceeds our wages – the very concept of “profit” is dependent upon surplus value.
