Is Social Media the Future of Healthcare?

I came across this interesting article outlining how social media can be used to improve patients overall health. In this article, Dr. Kevin Campbell explains how social media “provides patients an opportunity to easily interact with physicians, nurses and other patients”. Social media (specifically blogs) can be utilized to allow patients to express their experiences and gain an understanding of medical procedures prior to surgery. Similar to virtual games creating a virtual community, these blogs would create “virtual support groups” with patients sharing similar medical issues. These virtual support systems enable people around the world to support one another through their journeys. I think this is a great way to turn social media into a resourceful tool for medical information, and a safe place for support groups to share and connect.
